The story of Andrúm
Andrúm is an Icelandic band formed in 2003 by Ragnar Benediktsson. The band plays post-rock music with influences from bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Sigur Rós. The band quit in 2008 after having released two full-length albums, Gott Andrúm (2005) and Andvakar (2008).
The line-up
Through its lifespan Andrúm went through a number of changes in the line-up, with Ragnar (Guitar) being the only consistent member from the beginning. His cousin Arnar (Bass), who formed the band with him, quit in 2005 but rejoined in 2006. The band found its sound in 2005 when Birkir (Guitar and Keyboards), Magnús (Drums) and Jóna Palla (Vocals) joined, and together they crafted their own unique sound with Jóna Palla leading the way with her voice.
The release of Andvakar
In the summer of 2008 Andrúm released their second album Andvakar (Andvakar on amazon, also available on Spotify). The album was released independently and funded by the members themselves. It took 2 years to record and mix the music, due in large part to the cost involved. The album was recorded at studio Hljóðriti and Sundlaugin, owned by Sigur Rós, with Aron Arnarsson as recording engineer and mixer. The album was well received, earning a 5 star review in Iceland's biggest newspaper, Morgunblaðið. Andrúm disbanded later that year, having accomplished what they set out to do: two albums written, recorded, and released entirely on their own terms.
